On Christmas Day 1950 the Italian Radio broadcast a play based on Adalbert Stifter’s novella Rock Crystal. The music was by Nino Rota, the translation by Gabriella. Benci, and the radio adaptation by Ippolito Pizzetti (the son of the composer Ildebrando Pizzetti, who had been one of Rota’s teachers). [There is no trace left of the program], but the music has survived, together with a manuscript reduction for piano four hands of thirteen of the original nineteen scenes.–Sara Bartolucci and Rodolfo Alessandrini, translated by Elisabeth Hancock (from the preface for Schott sheet music ED 21391)
